Gabrielle Giffords has resigned from Congress, but her impact goes on.

The former Democratic lawmaker from Arizona, who is recovering from wounds suffered in the Tucson shooting spree last year, will join President Obama on Friday when he signs into law the last bill she sponsored in Congress.

The big story on Tuesday was Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s clean sweep in the Minnesota and Colorado caucuses and in Missouri’s “beauty contest” primary.

But there’s another story that could have greater import in November: the low turnout in this year’s Republican nominating contests.

On the night of the Nevada caucuses, as Mitt Romney hosted a boisterous presidential-style victory party in Las Vegas to celebrate a big Nevada win and Newt Gingrich held a combative press conference to insist his loss in the state would not slow his effort, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum was nowhere to be found in the Silver State.
